124 parties apply at EC for proportional election

Kathmandu, Sept. 30: A total of 124 political parties have applied at the Election Commission for the proportional candidates in the coming Constituent Assembly election.

However, a total of 130 political parties had applied for party registration at the EC to participate in the November 19 Ca elections earlier.

EC Spokesperson Bir Bahadur Rai said it would publish the name lists of the parties participating in the proportional election on Tuesday.

According to him, if the political parties which applied for the proportional election, want to withdraw their names/list, they are given time for tomorrow. Similarly, the final list would be published on October 3. As per the election schedule, the parties would send the candidate names through closed list on October 4.

The filing of the application was begun from 10 am at the central office of the EC at Kantipath, Kathmandu. CPN-ML’s politburo member Birendra Thapapaliya was the first one to apply for the participation in the proportional election.

According to the information given by the EC, the small parties had their chairmen present for filing the applications while others sent authorized persons for it.

However, CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal himself went to apply at the EC. The Nepali Congress sent its Chief Secretary Chinkaji Shrestha while the UCPN-Maoist a central member Hitraj Pande for filing applications.

Along with the application, each political party was asked to deposit Rs 10,000.  The parties had filled the application form with the information under the headings as name of party, address of party headquarters, date the party was registered at EC, election date, full name of the chairperson of the party and others.
