Jumla, Sept. 30: Local farmers are worried after their Kalo Marsi (local variety of paddy) paddy plantation has been badly damaged by blight disease. The Marsi paddy is the variety that is grown at the highest altitude area in the world and it has gone damaged almost in year by different diseases, locals said.

The paddy is on the verge of disappearing in the area due to the attack of several pathogens almost every year. The farmers have to till the field well and treat the soil for destroying it otherwise it cannot be eradicated totally, said the District Agriculture Office.

The paddy planted in the area of Chandan Nath, Mahat, Garjyankot, Kartikswami, Talium, Tatopani, Kudari, Raralihi, Deupal VDCs is totally damaged.  With this, locals are likely to face food crisis in these areas, it is learnt.

Though the farmers are optimistic towards the five year plan with ten year agricultural development strategy prepared by the District Agricultural Office to address the problem, it has not come into effect. RSS
