Rajbiraj, Nov. 18: Locals in Fattepur of Saptari district held dozens of CPN-UML cadres on charge of distributing money to voters during a silent period and handed them over to the police.

The Fattepur folks caught around 50 UML cadres while they were allegedly distributing money to voters at Sakhubani Tole in Fattepur VDC-5 of the district on Sunday night and handed over them to Area Police Office, Kanchanpur. The locals also caught three vehicles (Ko 1 Cha 7106, Ko 1 Cha 4929 and Ba 1 Cha 5437) used for this purpose.

Narayan Acharya, Uttam Gautam, Sushil Acharya, Sunil Acharya, Birendra Yadav Durga Fuyal, Tularam Luitel, and Manoj Basnet are among those arrested by the people on the charge of intending to buy votes.

The local people in coordination with the Unified CPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Democratic), caught the UML cadres for violating the election code of conduct, said a local Khagendra Karki.

Chief District Officer, Harikrishna Paudel, however, said the UML cadres were taken under police control when there was a situation of clash between UML and UCPN (Maoist) cadres.

The UML cadres were arrested red-handed while they were busy in making an election  door-to-door campaign in the silent period, CDO Paudel said, but expressed his ignorance whether or not the money was distributed.

Meanwhile, the UML candidate towards the first-past-the-post election system from Saptari Constituency no.1 refuted the charge and said conscious UML cadres just objected to other political parties who were going to distribute money to voters. He said the vehicles impounded the police were not only of the UML.
