Chhath Fesrival Concludes in janakpur

Janakpurdham, Nov. 9: Chhath, the biggest religious festival of the Mithilanchal region, has been concluded today.

Devotees had gathered in large numbers on the banks of ponds, lakes and rivers here since last night for observing this festival with gaiety and enthusiasm. They had thronged the local Ganga Sagar, Dhanush Sagar, Ram Sagar, Ratna Sagar, Bihar Kunda, Rukmini Sar, Agni Kunda and other religious ponds and lakes mentioned in the scriptures.

The festival concluded with the offerings made to the rising sun this morning on the waxing moon in the month of Kattik according to the lunar calendar. The festival begins on the fourth day of the bright half of the lunar calendar in the month of Kattik.         The festival concludes on the seventh day of the lunar calendar after offering argha (curd) to the Sun God.

Chhath is also known as Sashti, Surya Sashti Brat and Chhathi Parba. The goddess Sasthika is also worshipped on this day. This goddess is considered the sixth section of nature and the consort of Kartikeya, a Hindu deity. The festival is marked wishing good health, prosperity and brotherhood.

As many as 10,000 to 15,000 observing fast and 80,000 to 100,000 devotees had thronged the different ponds in Janakpur, it is learnt.  It is believed that this festival has been celebrated since the Vedic times. This festival commemorates the sun god. RSS
