Rupandehi entrepreneurs to defy general strike

Butwal, Nov. 8: The industry, business and professional organisations in Rupandehi district have vehemently opposed the general strike called by an alliance of 33 political parties led by the CPN-Maoist with the objective of disrupting the Constituent Assembly Election slated for this November 19.

They have also called for reliable security arrangements with the district administration, saying they can operate the industries and businesses only if there is reliable security.

Speaking in a discussions programme related to security organized by the District Security Committee in Bhairahawa today, the trade and industry leaders of the district said that they strongly opposed any activity aimed at disrupting the election and would defy the general strike. They expressed their commitment to extending support for creating conducive environment for the election.

The participating entrepreneurs and industrialists pledged to run transport services, industries and keep the markets open in defiance of the general strike and to maintain smooth supply of essential goods of daily need. The alliance plans to impose a country-wide general strike beginning November 11.

Representatives of over a dozen industry, transport and business organisations in the district attended the discussions programme. They vowed to completely defy the general strike if the administration guaranteed them full security.

Chief District Officer of Rupandehi district Bal Krishna Panthi assured the industry and business leaders of reliable security arrangements and urged them to foil the general strike called with the objective of disrupting the election.

He said the District Security Committee has made special security arrangements in view of the election and the said general strike. Also the coordinator of the District Security Committee, CDO Panthi said that the national highway and other feeder road, and the industrial and business areas would be placed under security cordon from November 10 itself and the security personnel would be mobilized.

Representatives of the Rupandehi Industry Association, the West Region Nepal Bus  Entrepreneurs’ Committee, the Siddharthanagar Transport  Entrepreneurs’ Committee, the Lumbini Truck Entrepreneurs’ Committee, the West Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs’ Committee, the Siddharthanagar  Industry Association, the Butwal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Rupandehi Trade Association, the Nepal National  Industry and Trade Organisation, the Siddhartha Hotel Association, the Hotel Entrepreneurs’ Association, Rupandehi, the West Region Tanker Entrepreneurs’ Committee, etc. were present in the discussions programme.
