Kathmandu, Oct. 7: The dalit leaders and rights defenders have expressed concern over Nepali Congress’ failure to select any dalit candidate for the first-past-the-post election of the Constituent Assembly scheduled for November 19.

At a news conference organized in the capital city on Monday, the rights activists said the Nepali Congress egregiously ignored dalits leaders while selecting FPTP candidate for the CA election.

A press release distributed at the conference read, “The dalit community has played significant role in every democratic movements of the country, but the Nepali Congress disrespected it by not selecting any dalit candidate for the CA election”.

Leader of Nepal Dalit Association affiliated to the Nepali Congress, Shyam Bishwokarma, said it was a blunder on the part of the Nepali Congress, which advocates equality and rights, to deprive dalits from getting directly elected to the CA.

The dalit community has demanded at least 13 percent representation in the CA.

The UCPN-Maoist has fielded candidacy from dalit community which amounts to 6.5 per cent to the total candidacy under the FPTP.

The CPN-UML has also fielded dalit leaders for the fPTP election in the CA. RSS
