Kathmandu, Nov. 12: The national Army’s presence in the field for poll security in view of November 19 Constituent Assembly (CA) election has drawn public debate of late.

Is it good to field the national army during the election? Will the army deputed for poll security be against the established values of democracy and international standard as featured in public discussion? These are the questions abuzz in public domain taking up the role of army in election.

Similarly, another pertfinent question is why doubt is being harbored on the Army’s role to provide security from the last ring. It may not be obvious to drag the national army’s role into controversy arguing that its presence will do no good for election and subsequently the country.

The government made the decision to mobilize national army considering its necessity to provide poll security in the sensitive time as it is the national force which is entrusted to handle security situation in crisis.

There is a glorious history of the use of Nepal Army in the United Nations (UN) mission of keeping peace across the globe. The national force, which has perfectly showcased its professional integrity and neutrality, has set an example of honesty and bravery in the world.

A question raises – how many times the Nepal Army having gained such merits even in international arena needs to appear in the confidence-testing examination?

The Nepal Army should be assessed based on the grid of performance and honesty it has shown in the national and international arena not on the basis of political interference made by army in other countries. RSS
