Kailali (Attariya), Nov. 12: Locals of Godabari VDC of Kailali district have said they will cast vote to those who could bring drinking water facility to their settlements.

The demand for drinking water featured when candidates contesting the Constituent Assembly (CA) election reached doorsteps of voters in course of electioneering.

There has been acute shortage of drinking water in most of the wards of Godavari VDC for over the years. People here have to fetch water from distant Machheli rivulet.

There is no possibility of water supply using underground source so the problem has become severe, said Prem Badaila, a local.

CPN-UML candidate from Kailali Constituency No. 5, Padma Singh Singal, said the people of Godavari had demanded arrangement for water facility in the area.

Likewise, Nepali Congress candidate Dirgha Raj Bhat said that the locals had demanded maintenance of Mohana Irrigation Project, which was constructed some 30 years ago.

Among major concerns of locals here are drinking water, road, irrigation and embankment to prevent soil erosion, said UCPN (Maoist) State Committee member Uddhav Bhattarai.

The project, which was constructed to provide irrigation facilities to Malakheti and Godavari of Kailali and Krishnapur VDC of Kanchanpur, has been in limbo after the Machheli rivulet swept away the dam.

The project constructed on government funding of Rs 90 million had a target to provide irrigation facility to total 2,000 hectares of cultivable land, said the Far-West Irrigation Development Division Office. RSS
