Census of water birds begins

Chitwan, Jan. 11: The counting of water birds in different national parks and watershed areas across the country has begun from today.

Census of water birds was started to fix the total number of birds living in wetlands in the country, said ornithologist Dr Hemsagar Baral.

Nearly 300 technicians and ornithologists would continue their job for two weeks in 60 sites including Chitwan National Park, Jagdhishpur Lake in Kapailbastu district, Koshitappu area, Pokhara, Bardiya, Shuklaphanta, Lumibini, Rara, Ghodaghodi Lake, according to Baral.

The technicians would study the status and habitats of birds as well.

A total of 875 species, including 550 species in Chitwan, in are found in the country while some species of birds are on the verge of extinction, Dr Baral said. Nearly, 200 species of birds are found in wetlands and watersheds alone.

Ornithologist at the Chitwan National Park Basu Bidari said like other wildlife birds also should be given equal importance as birds too have specific visitors in the national park.

Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), Bird Education Society and many other organizations are supporting in the water birds count. RSS
