Kathmandu, May 19– The KP Sharma Oli panel of the CPN (UML) announced candidacies for different senior posts of the party for the Ninth General Convention scheduled to be held in July.

Speaking at a press meet here today, party Vice-chairperson Biddyadevi Bhandari claimed that the UML Parliamentary Party leader KP Sharma Oli would be unanimously elected the UML party Chairman in the General Convention. She also announced the name of the UML leaders Bam Dev Gautam and Ishwor Pokhrel as the candidates for the Senior Vice-chairman and the General Secretary of the party.

Vice-chairperson Bhandari said if Oli’s name was announced also in the support of the UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, there could be support in the process of democratizing the party and handing over the party leadership to the new generation.

Leader Bhandari said senior leader Nepal had worked as the powerful General Secretary of the UML since 2056 B.S. and showed his capacity and that the party needed new leadership. She assured that leader Oli would work as the party chairman for a single term and would encourage the ‘one post one responsibility’ practice in the party.

It was announced at the programme to have the leadership handed over in the party’s upcoming general congress while giving continuity to the alliance that backed leader Oli in the UML parliamentary party election.

Party secretary Bishnu Poudel and politburo member Mukunda Neupane also said there was no alternative to Oli’s elevation to the party chairman from the upcoming general convention.

Poudel said at present party cadres all over the country and abroad want to see Oli become the party chairman. He called on all to be assured that the general convention will take place from July 3 to 8.

Another secretary Shankar Pokhrel said leader Oli should be elected the party chairman for taking the country on the path of socio-economic change on the foundation of the doctrine of ‘people’s multi-party democracy’.

Politburo member Neupane suggested leader Nepal to assume guardian’s role in the party and extend support to Oli to become the party chairman.

UML leaders Ram nath Dhakal, Kiran Gurung, Thammaya Thapa and others were present in the programme. General secretary Ishwar Pokhrel was, however, not present due to ill health. RSS
