Kathmandu, Jan. 10: Chairman of the UCPN-Maoist, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has said struggles from both parliament and street were needed to constitutionally guarantee Dalit’s rights.

With the representatives of different organizations working on Dalit rights at the party headquarters Koteshwor on Friday, Chairman Dahal said he would draw the attention of the high-level political committee on ensuring Dalits’ representatives in the 26 members of the Constituent Assembly to be nominated by the government.

Receiving a memorandum, Chairman Dahal said, “The Dalit rights defenders need to be united and struggle to ensure their rights in the new constitution.”

Samata Foundation, Jagaran Media Centre, and Collective Campaign for Peace met Chairman Dahal and complained that there was very low representation of Dalits in the Constituent Assembly. They demanded the proportional representation of the Dalits in each state body.

There was a meagre representation of Dalits- only 8.31 percent- in the last CA, which the organizations, argued was very little in terms of demographic proportion. For the second CA, the Dalits have 6.6 percent representation so far. RSS
