Bardibas, Jan. 7: Inmates at the Mahottari Jail at Jaleshwor in Mahottari district have been hit hard by the increasing cold.

They have been facing problems due to the severe cold for lack of warm clothes and space for eating food, sitting and sleeping.

The jailbirds have been facing the problem as the prison with the capacity to accommodate 135 people is overcrowded. It now has 486 inmates.

They said that they have been hit hard as the westerly cold wave that started to sweep across east Tarai from the second week of December increased in severity since last week.

The jail has two separate rooms—one for males and another for females. There are 45 people including six children in the female room and 441 men in the male room, said Jailer Shobhendra Thakur. The number is the highest in the 157-year history of the jail, said the administration.

The inmates said that they have been spending the nights shivering in cold due to lack of warm clothes, blankets and firewood.

However, the jail administration said that it has written to the Department of Prison Management and demanded for these supplies and the jailbirds would be provided with these articles within a week. RSS
