Kanchanpur, Dec. 31: Around 200 former kamaiya families have not yet got land though they have the land-ownership certificates provided by the government after the locals captured the land meant to be allotted to these families at Baisebichawa, Pachagadiya of Kanchanpur district.

The District Land Reform Office had decided to distribute five katthas of land to each family and also delimitated the land in Pachgadiya and Sitabasti in the district, said Radheshyam Rana, a freed kamaiya leader.

The freed kamaiyas have been taking shelter in their neighbours’ houses and still have to work for their landlords for livelihood despite possessing land ownership certificates.

The Freed Kamaiya Rehabilitation Committee distributed the land ownership certificates to them five years ago. The rehabilitation process was stopped after some of the locals attacked the officials of the committee. Locals encroached on around 40 Bighas of land in Pachgadiya.

As many as 3,045 families of freed kamaiyas were rehabilitated in the district after they were declared free 13 years back. RSS
