Agreement to beef up plant quarantine provision

Birgunj, Dec. 28: The stakeholders here have agreed to effectively implement the provision that seedlings and the related products could be imported to Nepal only after following the quarantine process.

After the locals mounted complaints on import of diseased and non-standard plants and seedlings through the border customs points, the Regional Plant Quarantine Office, Birgunj and stakeholders held a meeting and decided to strictly implement rule on import of seedlings and the related products.

The plant quarantine process must be abided by strictly while importing seedlings in order to control plant diseases.

According to the meeting, even an awareness programme would be launched on the supply of the saplings and plants.

Chief Quarantine Officer at Birgunj, Abadhesh Kumar Singh, said the lack of coordination and cooperation among the government bodies has resulted in slack implementation of the provision on import of the seedlings.

Every custom office, according to Quarantine Officer Mr Singh, must check the quarantine paper before collecting revenue. RSS
