Kathmandu, Dec. 21: An alliance of 33 political parties headed by the CPN-Maoist has stressed the need of forging national consensus, concluding that a new Constituent Assembly could not meet the people’s aspirations.

A meeting of the alliance took place Saturday at the CPN-Maoist central office, Buddhanagar, called for a prior agreement on the fundamental principles of a new constitution to draft a federal republican constitution from the people’s level, said party secretary Dev Gurung in a press note issued after the meeting.

The meeting demanded the government immediately release the party cadres arrested from Taplejung, Jajarkot and Chitwan in course of the alliance’s boycott of the Constituent Assembly (CA) election.

Stressing on national consensus, the meeting voiced  for holding an all-party political roundtable conference to finalise the fundamental principles of a new constitution.

Meanwhile, party Chairman Mohan Baidhya has warned that the new CA cannot begin the constitution-writing without reaching an agreement. Speaking at a party proramme in Kirtipur Saturday, Chairman Baidya ruled out the possibility of the next CA drafting a pro-people constitution. RSS
