Mugu, Dec. 20: A district-level strategic plan of action has been charted to eradicate Chhaupadi – a traditional practice to keep women in a shed far away from home during menstruation, from the district.

The action plan has been developed incorporating the need to conduct public awareness building programme, trasnform harmful traditional practices and devise traditional healers focused activities in coordination of government and non-government agencies working in all 24 VDcs of the district, said School Inspector Dhansudan Chaulagain.

The district could be declared a Chhaupadi-free zone within three years if coordinated efforts were made to organize public awareness and health focused programmes targeting elderly, school students and adolescents, said Radhika Malla, Chairperson of Karnali Integrated Women Development Forum, an NGO crusading for reproductive rights of women.

They have floated the idea to endorse the action plan from the meeting of district-level coordination committee and run it as a district campaign with lead role of District Council, said Min Bahadur Rawal, Chairperson of Himali Rural and Youth Society Development Centre, which has been conducting publc awareness raising programme on Chhaupadi in five VDCs of the district.
