Birgunj, Dec. 19: Women rights crusaders said there is no substantial reduction in the magnitude of gender-based violence owing to ineffective law enforcement.

At a public hearing programme organized here on Wednesday by Narayani FM, Birgunj and Divya Youth Club, Parsa with the assistance of Action Aid International Nepal, the participating speakers stressed the need to enforce the existing Act, laws, policy and action plan to address growing problem of violence against women.

The violence meted out against women is the violence against entire society, they said, adding that, ‘Women should be cautious enough as the incidents of gender-based violence are occurring due to unnecessary trust and dependence of women on men’.

Women eight activist duo, Raj Kumari Upadhya and Durga Timilsina said that the scale of gender-based violence is growing day after day when there is still fear to raise such incidents in society with protection of perpetrators from political parties and police.

Parsa Chief District Officer Kailash Kumar Bajimaya underlined the need for economic, social, political and cultural empowerment of women to dispense social justice to the victims. RSS
