Sundar Bazaar (Lamjung), Dec. 15: The Sundar Bazaar-Kunchha – Duipiple rural road is in the final leg of its completion, but the local users have complained of substandard gravelling.

Sixteen kilometers of the 23-kilometre-long road has been completed and construction works are going on at full speed on the remaining stretch of the road.

The road is constructed with the grant assistance of the Asian Development Bank and the technical assistance of the OPEC Fund for International Development and Swiss Development Cooperation.

Engineer at the District Technical Office, Jayaram Shrestha, said that the road is only to be graveled. He said the construction of the road had started four years ago and it is targeted to complete by July 2014.

According to him, so far Rs. 90 million has been spent on this road project and 525 individuals whose land fell under the road alignment provided the land to the project without taking any compensation.

Shrestha said this amount has been spent on construction works, compensation for land to the land-owners and operation of income-generation and skill development training for local community.

People of Kunchha, Jita, Tandrang, Taksar, Suryapal and Ramgha VDCs too have been benefited by the road. Construction of the road has eased the travel and transportation of the agriculture products from these VDCs to the market.

However, it is not all cheers. Some locals complain that the gravelling done on the road is of poor quality. Besides, since the road is only graveled and not asphalted, it has been polluting the air when vehicles run over it and it lets off plumes of dust.

The government has started constructing rural roads under the Decentralized Rural Infrastructure and Livelihood Programme (DRILP) in 18 remote hilly districts of the country with the objective of poverty alleviation and expanding the social services and economic opportunities  in these districts.

The Sundar Bazaar-Kunchha – Duipiple rural road is constructed under DRILP which is also under implementation in Taplejung, Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Gorkha, Lamjung, Baglung, Myagdi, Jajarkot, Jumla, Bajura, Bjhang, Baitadi, Darchula, Kalikot, Mugu, Humla and Dolpa districts. RSS
