Constitution should be promulgated within a year: leaders

Kathmandu, Dec. 13: Leaders of different political parties have said the nation could get constitution within a year if the political parties form a consensus government and make common understanding to carry out the tasks of constitution writing.

             Speaking at a programme organized by the Reporters’ Club here on Friday, the leaders stressed on the need of promulgating democratic constitution by forging consensus and reaching an understanding among the political parties.

              At the programme, Nepali Congress leader Dr. Narayan Khadka, said political parties need to work actively to promulgate the democratic constitution from the Constituent Assembly (CA). They should make mutual understanding in this effect.

             Khadka said constitution-writing process would be hampered if the parties concentrated their mind on holding election of the President and Vice-president now.

             Similarly, CPN (UML) leader, Raghubir Mahaseth, was of the opinion that an investigation commission could be formed to clear the doubt of the irregularities in the CA election as per the demand of some political parties including the Unified CPN (Maoist). He also stressed that the political parties need to forge a unity to write the new constitution.

             Likewise, UCPN (Maoist) leader, Devendra Paudel, said the political parties should be committed to promulgating the new constitution in order to institutionalize the achievements gained through People’s Movement II.

                       General Secretary of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Chandra Bahadur Gurung, said it was necessary to hold election for President and Vice-president as people’s supremacy was necessary in democracy. RSS
