Confidence towards judiciary on the rise: chairman regmi

Kathmandu, Dec. 12: Chairman of the Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi has said that the effective approach of judiciary to adjudicate corruption cases since the past few years in Nepal had heightened people’s trust and confidence towards the judiciary.

             Speaking at an ‘International Conference on Building Foundations of Integrity: National and International Experiences’ organized by Transparency International (TI) Nepal in the capital on Thursday, he said corruption in developing countries like Nepal always have its relation with socio-economic factor, education and political culture of the people.

             “Moreover, legal frameworks, political instability, tedious bureaucratic practice and lack of strong commitments of state are other provocative factors for corrupt practice. Therefore, anti-corruption programs should address these realities”, he said.

             Stating that different studies suggest that corruption is a serious disease that collapses the system entirely if it is not addressed timely, Chairman Regmi said however the causes and consequences should not be overlooked while acting through anti-corruption policy.

             The solutions for its eradication should also be sought being based on causes of corruption, he added.

             Chairman Regmi also said that the government of Nepal has aimed for the structural adjustments with a view to attaining positive results in the fight against corruption by applying preventive approach at preliminary level and punitive approach when there are deliberate violations of state laws resulting to the commission of offence of corruption.
