Kathmandu, Dec. 11: The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has directed the bodies concerned for proper management of waste materials produced from hospitals.

The CIAA’s directive to this end came following a public complaint about negative impact on environment and public health caused by the lack of proper disposal of medical waste.

According to CIAA Assistant Spokesperson Keshab Prasad Ghimire, the Commission on Wednesday held discussion with office bearers of Ministry of Health, Urban Development, Federal Affairs and Local Development, Kathmandu Metropolitan and other sub-metropolis and municipalities in the valley, waste management technical assistance center, Bir Hospital, Kanti Bal Hospital and Maternity Hospital of Thapathali and issued directive for proper management of the medical waste.

The CIAA also decided to write to the Chief Secretary, asking to carry out necessary improvements in policy and cooperate with bodies concerned to make the management of hospital waste more effective and safe.

Similarly, a high-level monitoring taskforce shall be formed with the participation of representatives of bodies concerned for effective enforcement of acts related to management of waste materials produced from hospitals, monitoring of such acts and informing the Commission about that.

Meanwhile, the CIAA began a field visit of the Biratnagar-based Nobel Medical College and Bhairahawa-based Universal Medical College from Wednesday, responding to the complaints lodged on the affiliation of hospitals and number of seats. RSS
