Leaders pledge to draft constitution in year

Kathmandu, Dec. 6: The second-rung leaders of major four political parties have expressed commitment to promulgating the new constitution within a year by incorporating all political parties.

At a programme organized by the Media Initiative for Rights Equity and Social Transformation (MIREST) Nepal on ‘Constitution Writing and Political Accountability’ on Friday, Chairman of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP)-Nepal Kamal Thapa said that his party would perform a constructive role despite sitting in the opposition bench in the government.

He said that the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN (UML) should take all parties on board by advocating a middle-path ideological line while adding that political achievements were not institutionalized due to narrow-minded thoughts and politics of negation.

Likewise, UCPN (Maoist) leader Narayankaji Shrestha said that his party was committed to constitution writing and the peace process.

Shrestha also said that election rigging should be investigated for the credibility of the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.

Also speaking at the programme, Nepali Congress leader Dr Narayan Khadka said that Nepalis want a democratic constitution with social harmony and goodwill based on feasibility and his party was committed to that end.

Similarly, UML leader Bhim Acharya said that the disputed issues of the constitution should be resolved either through the two-thirds majority or through referendum.

Acharya said that there was no relevance of the street protest for ethnic and regional division in the country. RSS
